It’s interesting how many people who have spent years in the same place decide to try life on the road. My husband and I have done just that though we don’t live full time on the road. We have a home base, but are in our travel trailer about fifty percent of the time.
It isn’t as inexpensive as people might assume, campground prices can be high, fuel is expensive and so are fees at most of the popular sights around the US. On the flip side, I alway have my house with me so I don’t have to pack and unpack all the time. I can cook in my own kitchen and sleep in my own bed each night.
Life on the road is great. Lots of new sights to see and things to do. Last year we spent four days camped on the edge of a cliff looking out over the badlands in South Dakota. Even with other people camped all around us it was peaceful, the view was incredible and I got the opportunity to be face to face with a bighorn ram as he made his way through the area. A couple of weeks later we were exploring Craters of the Moon National Monument, a place that feels like visiting another planet. We hiked through lava covered trails, crawled through a mile long cave and climbed a mountain of cinder.
This year for various reasons we needed to stay closer to home base but we have still managed to see some new things, take our grandkids on a quick adventure and we have some exciting things yet to come.
I’m grateful for the memories we are making and I’m truly grateful for having the ability to be wherever we want or need to be and still be “home”.
